| The first San Marino Grand Prix
was a non-championship race held in 1979, just a week after the
Italian Grand Prix. The circuit had been in existance since the
1950s but had never played a major role in international racing.
The circuit proved popular with the drivers, and the fans loved
the place too, and as the circuit was named in honour of Enzo
Ferrari's son Dino, it was not difficult to persuade him to help
get the track established on the Formula One calender.
The
problem was that since World Championship racing had begun in 1950
one of the rules stated that no country could host more than one
race in a single season. There had been the odd exception of
course, usually relating to the USA, or when an alternative
circuit stages a 'European' race. What Enzo Ferrari decided to do
was arrange for the tiny Republic of San Marino to provide a flag
of convieniance for the Imola race. The suggestion worked and
since then the tifosi have had the opportunity to go mental
at two races every year.
The venue has produced some remarkable, and
controversial races, over the years such as the 1982 event - most
notable for Pironi's last lap move on Villeneuve that led to a
feud between the two drivers that ended when Gilles was killed at
Zolder two weeks later. The 1983 race was an emotional one for
many Ferrari fans when Patrick Tambay, Villeneuve's replacement,
scored a win.
Sadly however Imola is perhaps best
remembered as the place where triple world champion Ayrton Senna,
and rookie Roland Ratzenberger, lost their lifes in 1994.
